Can film festivals also be political spaces? That was the absurd question that ran through this year’s Berlin Film Festival. It all began with jury president Wim Wenders saying during the fest’s opening press conference that filmmakers “are the counterweight to politics. We are the opposite of politics,” and raged over the course of the 11-day event, with pretty much everyone getting their digs in. Now, the German government is reportedly reconsidering its relationship with the festival, with the country’s minister of state for culture calling “an extraordinary meeting” of the organization that manages the event.
