PROFESSOR Tony Pollard is showing me around the mementos in the study of his home in Glasgow’s west end. The keepsake which means the most is an old black and white picture of Private Harry Willis, a farm labourer from Australia who died in the First World War. There’s a dedication to Pollard from Harry’s family. It reads: “Thanks for bringing our Harry from darkness into the light.” Pollard discovered Harry’s body nearly 100 years after he died on the western front.
