A councillor at the centre of the ban on Israeli football fans in Birmingham has been embraced by senior Labour figures, The Telegraph can disclose. Wassem Zaffar, 44, who played a role in the decision to ban Maccabi Tel-Aviv supporters from a game at Villa Park, described Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, as a “friend” and sang Happy Birthday to Lucy Powell, the deputy Labour leader.
