THE continuing surge in English Channel crossings by boatloads of illegal migrants is a humiliating symbol of the Labour Government’s impotence. As the human traffickers carry on their ugly, criminal trade, the final shreds of credibility are being torn away from Sir Keir Starmer and his enfeebled Cabinet colleagues. In opposition, Labour was severely critical of the Tories’ failure to tackle the small boats crisis. Posing as the champion of strong maritime borders, Sir Keir promised to “smash the gangs” of traffickers when he came to power. But he has proved utterly incapable.
