HILTON HEAD ISLAND — In June 1944, Cecil Hart was a 19-year-old private first class in the U.S. Army serving in the thick of the struggle to free western Europe from the grasp of Nazi forces. In a quiet ceremony held on Hilton Head more than 81 years later, the grateful nation of France awarded Hart its highest honor for his service toward the liberation of that country.
