Bendigo residents believe the recent controversy surrounding the city's signature writers' festival will damage its reputation for years to come. More than 50 writers and hosts withdrew from the Bendigo Writers Festival after organiser Greater Bendigo City Council sent a code of conduct to participants. The code stipulated writers should "avoid language or topics that could be considered inflammatory, divisive or disrespectful". It also required guests speaking at La Trobe University-sponsored sessions to comply with Universities Australia's definition of anti-Semitism.
