On a bright, warm afternoon in the fashionable German spa town of Baden-Baden, I stumbled upon a black and white photograph, fixed to a stand in an open-air car park. It stopped me in my tracks. The image showed, in stunning detail, a massive, elegant building that at first glance looked like a castle. It had large adjoining buildings, a grand entrance and staggered arches. In an image immediately next to it, I saw the same building engulfed in flames. Children and adults were lining the steps to watch it burn. The once beautiful Baden-Baden synagogue burned to the ground...
