I like my politicians the way I like my phones: smart. Switched on and tuned in to what’s going on in the world. Listening all the time. (Can’t say I love that about the phones, though.) The people we elect should know a lot about a lot, and be able to express it with eloquence. Or, at the very least, accuracy. They should be educated (autodidacts count) and remain lifelong learners. They should know history. I like a politician who reads widely. Who reads, period. A good politician should be able to communicate articulately and authentically – and not just...
