The German submarine U-234 departed Kristiansand, the German-occupied harbor town at the southern tip of Norway, on April 15, 1945. Under the command of Kapitanleutnant Johann-Heinrich Fehler, the U-234 carried 240 tons of secret cargo plus sufficient diesel fuel and provisions for a six to nine-month voyage around the tip of Africa, through the Indian Ocean, and then on to Japan.
