Dutch writer Lisa Weeda is of Ukrainian descent. Her novel Aleksandra tells the story of her grandmother, who was deported by the Nazis from the Luhansk region to Germany for forced labor, and whose love story later brought her to the Netherlands. At the same time, the novel introduces Western readers to some of the complex chapters of Ukrainian history – from the Holodomor and Soviet collectivization to the war in eastern Ukraine.
