News Snapshot:
“Homesick for a World Unknown: The Life of George B. Schaller”By Miriam Horn; Penguin Press, 2026; $40; 626 pages.George Schaller, the legendary and still living (at 93) field biologist, is well-known for his early studies of Congolese mountain gorillas, Indian tigers, Chinese pandas, Asiatic cheetahs, Tibetan antelopes and Nepalese snow leopards, among other species. His life work changed understandings of animal behavior and the science of field biology and conservation. The young scientists he trained, and who then trained others, all around the world continue on his path. What is little appreciated until now is Schaller’s early start in Alaska...
