7NEWS has obtained a confidential government briefing which exposes how badly NSW’s hate speech laws are failing, with only four convictions ever secured. The shocking revelation has stunned a closed-door parliamentary committee hoping to create change, as police struggle to prosecute those inciting violence and hatred. The confidential briefing to the Department of Communities and Justice Law and Safety Committee showed since 2018, police have laid charges in just 14 matters relating to hate speech and the use of certain phrases and publicly threatening or inciting violence.
