In an otherwise insightful commentary, a writer for these pages declared that we already live in a fascist state. For other observers, fascism is a term of abuse. And still others focus on it as an ideology but without grasping its material dimensions. I want to fence with this misleading thinking and suggest how to stem the rising tide of fascism. Astute analysis is needed, for different perceptions of fascism come from a spectrum: social democrats, liberals and the Right, which wants to disassociate itself from the tainted legacy of the Nazi era while renewing some of its stances.
